How long the frost-free season lasts in each state: PlainClimate analysis of NOAA data, published October 8, 2026
The typical place in Hawaii has the longest frost-free season (a median of 365 days) and the typical place in Alaska the shortest (114). Within a state the range can be wide: Hawaii runs from 365 days in Ewa Beach to 365 in Waimea.
Every state, longest typical season first
How this was measured
NOAA's median growing season (the number of days between the last spring and the first autumn night at 32°F or colder, at 50% probability) for every Census place PlainClimate covers, summarized per state as the median, shortest and longest. States with fewer than three such places are left out.
What it cannot tell you
A station measures frost at its thermometer, about five feet up: low ground frosts earlier and later. Places without frost in a typical year (a season of 365 days) are left out of the shortest-longest range.
